In August 2019, when we visited Kullvi WHIMS in India for the first time, we sat together on the first day amongst piles of their handcrafted goods and samples. We spotted a pair of beautiful grey socks, and asked about them. Palmo, one of the artisans, who grew up in Lahaul, had knit them with local wool. We had seen similar socks in the village shops, but the motifs were knit in brightly coloured acrylic yarns. Palmo had used undyed grey and white wool instead, and they were beautiful and thick.
Over time, as we worked on developing our wool yarns, we chose to make two kinds of socks -- our Bed Socks, knit with Lahauli wool - luxuriously soft and cozy - and our Boot Socks, knit with desi wool - more rustic, more durable and long lasting.
